Montamarta
Village
Montamarta is a village in the comarca of Tierra del Pan, in the province of Zamora, located 17 kilometres from the provincial capital, on the left bank of the Esla reservoir, along which runs the Vía de la Plata; it is known as the village of the storks for its countless nests. Its founding goes back to the medieval resettlement by the León kings, and the first written mention dates from 1038, in the reign of Fernando I of León; the oldest surviving remains are in the hermitage of the Virgen del Castillo, with Romanesque corbels. In 1407 two friars from Guadalupe founded the monastery of Nuestra Señora de Montamarta, moved in 1534 to Zamora, which led to its abandonment. On 1 and 6 January, El Zangarrón, a winter masquerade, comes out. It has 549 inhabitants.
