La Hiniesta
Village
La Hiniesta is a village in the province of Zamora, in the comarca of Tierra del Pan, with 293 inhabitants according to the 2025 register, barely eight kilometres from the provincial capital. Its church of Santa María la Real, a monumento histórico-artístico (a former Spanish heritage-protection designation) since 1944, stands on the spot where, according to tradition, the Virgin appeared to King Sancho IV while he was hunting: on picking up a partridge brought down by his falcon, he found among the broom shrubs, or hiniestas, a small image of Mary, and in 1290 he exempted the local inhabitants from taxes. The municipal area preserves the depopulated hamlets of Palomares, Toral and Valduercos, and in the mid-19th century the village had 144 inhabitants. Every Whit Monday, the Virgin of the Concha comes up from the provincial capital to visit her “cousin”, the Virgin of the Hiniesta.
