Villafrechós
Village
Villafrechós is a town of around 470 inhabitants in Tierra de Campos, in the province of Valladolid, known for its sugared almonds, located beside the río Navajos, a tributary of the Valderaduey. It has Vaccaean settlements and Roman terra sigillata deposits. In 1904 it was the scene of peasant revolts and strikes over the rise in the price of wheat, and the village was the birthplace of Salvador Bezos, paternal grandfather of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. It preserves the church of San Cristóbal, from the 15th and 16th centuries, and the Gothic convent of Santa Clara, from the 15th century, of rammed earth and brick with a star-ribbed vault, considered the tallest rammed-earth building in Europe. At its September festivities it lets loose the Vaca Enmaromada, a traditional bull spectacle held since 2008.
