What to see and do in Villafranca de Duero

Villafranca de Duero
Village
Villafranca de Duero is a village of 247 inhabitants on the left bank of the Duero, near the San José reservoir, in the Valladolid comarca of Tierra del Vino; its name recalls the Franks who resettled it around the 11th century. It lives from farming and livestock, with white wines of the Rueda designation and red wines of the Toro designation. Its church of Santa María Magdalena, rebuilt in 1981 on an old brick-and-rammed-earth temple, houses a Romanesque crucified Christ from the late 12th century and a 16th-century carving of its titular saint. The main festivities, with bullfights and open-air dances, are held in honour of Santa María Magdalena on 22 July.
