What to see and do in Castronuño

Castronuño
Village
Castronuño is a town of 737 inhabitants located in the southwest of the province of Valladolid, equidistant from Zamora and Salamanca. It owes its name to Nuño Pérez de Lara, who repopulated it around the mid-12th century, when he served as royal standard-bearer to Alfonso VII of León. Known as the Great Florida of the Duero, it lies within the Riberas de Castronuño-Vega del Duero nature reserve, and from the La Muela viewpoint one can see the bend traced by the river, considered one of the largest meanders in Europe. It preserves the church of Santa María del Castillo, and beside the village stretches the Castronuño reservoir, which together with the protected area forms the municipality's chief scenic attraction.

Nature
The Reserva Natural de las Riberas de Castronuño-Vega del Duero, also known as the Gran Florida del Duero, protects the riverside woods and wetlands of the settlements of Castronuño, Pollos, Torrecilla de la Abadesa and Tordesillas, along a stretch where the Duero forms one of the most pronounced meanders in Europe, visible from the La Muela viewpoint in Castronuño. The San José reservoir, built in the 1940s, flooded fertile sediments that were colonised by large stands of reed beds, which attracted numerous waterbirds such as the purple heron, the black-crowned night heron and the osprey. It was declared a Special Protection Area for Birds in 1992 and a Nature Reserve ten years later.
