What to see and do in Fuentelapeña

Fuentelapeña
Village
Fuentelapeña is a Zamoran town of 589 inhabitants in the comarca of La Guareña, whose name, from the Latin fons and pinna, alludes to a spring that gushes from a large rock. The earliest human remains in the municipality date back to the Lower Palaeolithic, documented at the Valdeagún site, and from the Arab period a 9th-century qanat has been discovered. Located in the Guareña Plains, an area protected as a Special Protection Area for Birds for its population of great bustard, hen harrier and little bustard, it retains the Renaissance church of Santa María de los Caballeros, a monument since 1983, whose tower was funded by minister Claudio Moyano, who was born here, and the hermitage of the Santísimo Cristo de Méjico, next to the cemetery.
The church of Santa María de los Caballeros
Monument
Built between 1563 and 1567 by Juan del Valle, a collaborator of Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, with a façade by Hernando de Nates and low reliefs of the school of Gregorio Fernández; it was declared a monument in 1983.
The Arab qanat of Fuentelapeña
Curiosity
Beneath the municipal district a qanat has been documented, an underground water-collecting gallery of Arab tradition dated to the ninth century; in 1993 a Lower Palaeolithic site also appeared at the spot of Valdeagún.
The great bustards of the Llanuras del Guareña
Nature
The municipal area of Fuentelapeña forms part of the Llanuras del Guareña, a Natura 2000 site extending over 41,767 hectares in the comarcas of Tierra del Vino and La Guareña, in the southeast of Zamora, structured by the Guareña river. It is a plateau between 800 and 820 metres with dry cereal fields, irrigated land and vineyards, moorland and young holm-oak woods, while the river's floodplain preserves pastures and riverside woodland. Seasonal ponds such as Los Llanos or Belliscas fill in the rainy season and attract waterfowl. The site was declared a ZEPA (Special Protection Area for Birds), code ES0000208, for its breeding population of great bustard, of national and international importance, and for also hosting little bustard, Montagu's harrier and hen harrier, as well as one of the few breeding centres of the pin-tailed sandgrouse in Castile and León.
The pilgrimage of the Cristo de México
Activity
On 15 September the hermitage near the cemetery brings out in procession the Santísimo Cristo de México, with an auction of the image; from 12 to 18 August San Roque and the Assumption are celebrated with bullfighting events.
The tower ordered by minister Moyano
Monument
The tower of the Renaissance church was added in 1880 by order of the minister Claudio Moyano, three centuries after Juan del Valle raised the body of the church between 1563 and 1567.
