What to see and do in Cañizal

Cañizal
Village
Cañizal is a town of 410 inhabitants set along a hillside, on the border between Zamora and Salamanca, at an altitude of 814 metres, with a cold, dry Mediterranean climate. Its name comes from the Latin cannicius, referring to the cloth framework of traditional carts. Pottery found at the La Huesa site places an early Middle Ages settlement between the 5th and 7th centuries, which survived the Muslim conquest of 711; the present-day settlement had its origin in the lordship that the Order of San Juan de Jerusalén assembled thanks to the donations of Urraca I of León, in 1116, and of her son Alfonso VII during the 12th century. It preserves an 18th-century ashlar manor house declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1991, and on the outskirts the chapel of the Virgen de la Cruz with its wayside cross in front.
The heraldic house on Calle de la Plata
Monument
Declared a bien de interés cultural in 1991, it was raised in the second half of the eighteenth century in dressed stone, with rectangular windows and iron balconies; it is the most notable civil building in the whole municipality.
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Visitación
Monument
Built in the seventeenth century over a vanished Romanesque church, it stands out for its wide vaults, its firm walls and its altarpieces; on the outskirts remains the hermitage of the Virgen de la Cruz with its stone cross.
The battles preceding the Arapiles
Historical milestone
The surroundings of Cañizal were the scene of the fighting that preceded the battle of Los Arapiles, in 1812, during the Peninsular War; today they are commemorated with a biennial historical re-enactment alongside the neighboring villages.
The site of La Huesa
Nature
The spot of La Huesa preserves an early medieval settlement of the fifth to seventh centuries, the oldest testimony of the municipal district; in 1116 queen Urraca I donated these lands to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
The streams of San Moral and la Ermita
Nature
Two streams, that of San Moral and that of la Ermita, cross a flat, elevated municipal district that ranges between 760 and 848 metres, under a cold Mediterranean climate, very continental and dry, with harsh winters.
