The great bustards of the Llanuras del Guareña Nature · Fuentelapeña, La Guareña, Zamora Image of Fuentelapeña, not of the place itself. The municipal area of Fuentelapeña forms part of the Llanuras del Guareña, a Natura 2000 site extending over 41,767 hectares in the comarcas of Tierra del Vino and La Guareña, in the southeast of Zamora, structured by the Guareña river. It is a plateau between 800 and 820 metres with dry cereal fields, irrigated land and vineyards, moorland and young holm-oak woods, while the river's floodplain preserves pastures and riverside woodland. Seasonal ponds such as Los Llanos or Belliscas fill in the rainy season and attract waterfowl. The site was declared a ZEPA (Special Protection Area for Birds), code ES0000208, for its breeding population of great bustard, of national and international importance, and for also hosting little bustard, Montagu's harrier and hen harrier, as well as one of the few breeding centres of the pin-tailed sandgrouse in Castile and León.
