What to see and do in Castrillo de la Guareña

Castrillo de la Guareña
Village
Castrillo de la Guareña is a village in the La Guareña region, in the province of Zamora, 53 km from the provincial capital, with 133 inhabitants (INE 2025), set in the flat depression formed by the river Guareña. There are Chalcolithic sites at El Coto and Early Iron Age ones at Cuesta el Pico. In 1116 Queen Urraca I of León ceded these lands, then called Castrillo de Villavite, to the Order of San Juan. It belonged to the province of Toro until that province disappeared in the early 19th century, and during the Peninsular War it was burned by French troops. It preserves adobe houses dated to around 1800 with heraldic coats of arms, and its chapel of the Cristo de la Salud holds an almost life-size crucifix in the transitional style to Gothic, to which healing powers are attributed.

Monument
The hermitage of whitewashed brick holds an almost life-size crucifix, transitional in style and dated to the fourteenth century, to which healing properties are attributed and around which the May pilgrimage festival turns.

Activity
From 16 May, a confraternity with more than two hundred years of history organises the pilgrimage festival of the Cristo de la Salud, at which the relics are auctioned; the day before, the conscripts plant the maypole in the square.

Nature
The río Guareña crosses the municipal district in a predominantly flat landscape that ranges between 717 and 834 metres; at the spot of El Coto material of the Chalcolithic period appeared.
The 16th-century Virgin and Child
Curiosity
The parish church of San Juan Bautista, inaugurated in 1965 in brick of modern air, preserves a sixteenth-century polychrome Virgin and Child and a seventeenth-century image of its titular, saved from the earlier church.
