What to see and do in Justel

Justel
Village
Justel, in Carballés Xustel, is a municipality in the comarca of La Carballeda, in the province of Zamora, which until the mid-19th century was called Justel y Quintanilla and then had 164 inhabitants; it incorporated Villalverde around 1850 and came to be called simply Justel, although it continued to include Quintanilla. In 1960 the village suffered a major emigration of its young people to Barcelona, Madrid and Bilbao, following that of their parents, twenty years earlier, to Germany and France because of the war, which accelerated its ageing. With 75 inhabitants today across the hamlets of Quintanilla and Villalverde, it lives off livestock farming and agriculture. Its church, with a tall bell tower and capacity for a hundred people, marked the life of the village with its bells before that emigration.

Monument
The church with a tall bell gable, with room for a hundred people, and the clock tower mark the profile of the village; around them stand houses with an inner courtyard and rendered brick walls.
The festivities of San Justo y Pastor
Activity
Justel celebrates San Justo and San Pastor at the beginning of August and its outlying village of Villalverde honours San Tirso on 28 January; on the first Sunday of September a pilgrimage festival brings together people from Sanabria and the Carballeda.
The emigration of the sixties
Historical milestone
In the 1960s a large part of the residents of Justel, Quintanilla and Villalverde left for Barcelona, Madrid and Bilbao; the municipality, once called Justel y Quintanilla, today has seventy-five inhabitants.
