Ferreras de Abajo
Village
Ferreras de Abajo is a Zamora village of 461 inhabitants, at 826 metres above sea level, near the border with Portugal; it belonged to the monastery of Moreruela and not, as its geographical comarca might suggest, to the powerful marquisate of Tábara. The mountain of La Pedrizona, 1,055 metres high, is one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the province, and growing interest in the wolf has encouraged a hiking route up to it. At El Castillo there was a hillfort, one of twenty-nine Iron Age settlements identified around the sierra de la Culebra. The village is also known for its traditional music, with tabor drum and fole bagpipe, and holds the Sierra de la Culebra folklore festival in August.
