Santa Cristina de la Polvorosa
Village
Santa Cristina de la Polvorosa is a municipality in Zamora, in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, whose town centre sits on the right bank of the Órbigo river, less than five kilometres from Benavente; this proximity has made the town one of the most dynamic in the comarca. From the Roman villa of Requejo, found within its territory, come several mosaics and mural paintings now kept in the Museum of Zamora. Near the village, around the year 876, the Battle of Polvoraria was fought, in which Alfonso III the Great defeated the troops of Al-Mundir of Córdoba, a decisive victory for the Christian repopulation of the area within the Kingdom of León. Its most notable building is the parish church, with images presided over by Santa Cristina, its patron saint. It now has 1,034 inhabitants.
