Villaferrueña
Village
Villaferrueña is a hamlet of 105 inhabitants crossed by the Eria river, with a wide, stony bed and a flow so variable that in summer it comes to run only underground. It shares with Arrabalde the castro of Las Labradas, an Astur settlement of the second Iron Age later occupied by the Romans, and is surrounded by an extensive holm-oak wood. In the Middle Ages, integrated into the Kingdom of León, it was given as a reward to the knight Ponce Giraldo de Cabrera, who received it together with Moreruela and Morales del Rey for accompanying Berenguela of Barcelona to her wedding with Alfonso VII. Its farmland, devoted to irrigated potatoes, sugar beet and barley, coexists with vineyards in decline and dwindling livestock farming. On the hill known as la Sierra, a spur of the sierra de la Culebra, a wind farm has been installed.
