Alcubilla de Nogales
Village
Alcubilla de Nogales is a hamlet of 108 inhabitants in the Eria valley, on the northern edge of Zamora province. Its name comes from the Hispano-Arabic alkúba, although popular tradition traces it to the small alcove (alcoba) once used by the abbot of the nearby monastery of Nogales, of which ruins still survive a kilometre from the village. Its area holds several Neolithic dolmens and the Cueva de los Moros, in the Sierra de Carpurias, the earliest traces of settlement. Resettled in the Middle Ages, it depended on the monastery of Nogales under the Kingdom of León. It preserves the church of San Verísimo and falls under the geographical indication for quality wine of Valles de Benavente. It celebrates Corpus Christi, moved to the first weekend of August, when the largest crowd gathers in the town.
