Santa María de la Vega
Village
Santa María de la Vega is a municipality in the province of Zamora, in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, situated between the Eria and Órbigo rivers, with 259 inhabitants and 17.90 km² of municipal area. It was created in 1925 from the union of the former towns of Redelga and Verdenosa, which until then had been part of the municipality of Morales de Rey and are today its two neighbourhoods. Founded in the Middle Ages within the Kingdom of León, they later belonged to the lands of the Count of Benavente and, after the provincial reorganisation of 1833, passed to the province of Zamora. Its hillsides are riddled with a multitude of wine cellars, and its church boasts a large stone tower with two bells. It celebrates la Asunción on 15 August, San Roque the following day, and la Virgen del Carmen at the end of September.
