What to see and do in Morales de Rey

Morales de Rey
Village
Morales de Rey is a municipality of 529 inhabitants situated in the valley of the Eria river, in the northeast of Zamora, sheltered to the south by the foothills of the sierra de Carpurias; its municipal area also includes the hamlet of Vecilla de la Polvorosa. The village's name comes from the black poplars and mulberry trees —moral, in Leonese tradition— that populate its vega, today given over to irrigated crops such as maize, potatoes and sugar beet, while the hillside retains pines, holm oaks and rosemary. The epithet «de Rey» distinguishes it from other places called Morales in the region, such as Morales del Vino or Morales de Toro. It retains centuries-old wine cellars, and on the Sunday following the 14th of September the Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz is carried from its hermitage to the parish church.

Nature
Next to this megalithic tomb of some five thousand years stand a full-size replica and an archaeological classroom, in the Eria valley and at the foot of the Sierra de Carpurias, among pines, holm oaks, yews and mulberry trees.

Food and drink
On 25 April the residents go up to the cellars of the village, some of them centuries old, on the day known as El Tortillero; on 15 May ring-shaped loaves are shared out and the traditional costume is worn.
