Maire de Castroponce
Village
Maire de Castroponce is a village in the province of Zamora, in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, near the border with León, set on a hill overlooking the valley of the river Órbigo, with 138 inhabitants compared with 342 in the mid-19th century. Its church of the Nativity holds a Nursing Virgin. In Roman times it was an important crossing point beside the bridge of La Vizana, where the Vía de la Plata crossed the Órbigo. Its surname, Castroponce, recalls its belonging, in the early modern period, to the county of Castroponce, a title granted in 1670 to Fernando de Luján y Robles. During the Civil War the executed Republican mayor of La Bañeza, Ángel González, was buried in the cemetery of Maire.
