Coomonte
Village
Coomonte is a village in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, on the northern edge of the province of Zamora, with 180 inhabitants. The earliest written references date from the late Middle Ages, when the place was under the monastery of Nogales; in the 16th century the council hired the painter Juan de Holanda for the main altar of the church of San Juan Bautista, with a basilical plan of three naves and three apses, and its men-at-arms took part in the 1580 levies to fight in Portugal. In the 17th century a flood of the river Órbigo reduced the population to less than half, and in the early 19th century the Napoleonic invasion burned the church. It belonged to the province of León until the 1833 reorganisation, when it passed to Zamora, while keeping its attachment to the Leonese Region.
