Fresno de la Polvorosa
Village
Fresno de la Polvorosa is a village of barely four square kilometres in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, province of Zamora, bathed by the river Órbigo; it has 117 inhabitants. Its name recalls the battle of la Polvorosa, fought in the year 878 in its vicinity, when the Asturian-Leonese army of Alfonso III triumphed and the place was brought into the Kingdom of León; flint axes, millstones and Roman bricks found on its territory attest to a much older occupation. In the 1833 provincial reform it passed from the Leonese Region to the province of Zamora. Its parish church of the Saviour, rebuilt in the 18th century on foundations believed to be from the 13th, preserves Romanesque remains and a large bell tower. In 1966, under mayor Joaquín Rodríguez Blanco, the bridge over the Órbigo was built, linking the municipality with Pobladura del Valle.
