Villabrázaro
Village
Villabrázaro is a municipality in Zamora with 255 inhabitants, situated on the Vía de la Plata, an old Roman and medieval road, today at a motorway junction; besides the eponymous town it includes the hamlet of San Román del Valle. It had an agricultural past that has given way to a more industrial economy, with maize pastures, rain-fed cereals and holm oaks. Its territory is marked by the valley of the Órbigo river, which runs through it from north to south and receives the waters of the Eria, and the village stands at 733 metres. Next to San Román del Valle is the sanctuary and convent of Nuestra Señora del Valle, Gothic in style from the 14th and 15th centuries, with a notable Baroque façade; the earliest documents about this sanctuary date from June of the year 970. Its original coffered ceiling now decorates the Torre del Caracol of the Parador de Benavente.
