What to see and do in Molezuelas de la Carballeda

Molezuelas de la Carballeda
Village
Molezuelas de la Carballeda is a hamlet in the comarca of La Carballeda, in the province of Zamora, with 47 inhabitants. Its compound name has been linked to "muela", in the sense of mill, and to the Zoelae, a pre-Roman tribe of the Astur people who inhabited these lands. Resettled by the Leonese kings after the Reconquest, it was placed within the diocese of Astorga and belonged to the province of León until passing to that of Zamora in 1833; in the mid-19th century it had 288 inhabitants. It retains the church of San Millán and the hermitages of the Virgen de la Puente and the Bendito Cristo. The footballer and coach Javier Clemente, grandson of a resident of the village, was descended from Molezuelas.
The church of San Millán
Monument
The parish church presides over a village of forty-seven inhabitants situated at 799 metres of altitude, at the northern end of the comarca, within a municipal district of thirty-four square kilometres.
The hermitage of the Virgen de la Puente
Monument
A small sanctuary on the outskirts of the built-up area that maintains, together with the hermitage of the Bendito Cristo, the devotion of a municipality with barely 1.36 inhabitants per square kilometre, among the emptiest in Zamora.
The Zoelas and the name of the village
Curiosity
The place name has been explained by joining the muelas or hills of the municipal district with the name of the Zoelae, a pre-Roman people of Asturian stock settled in these lands before the arrival of Rome.
The leap from León to Zamora
Historical milestone
The provincial division of 1833 took Molezuelas out of the province of León and incorporated it into that of Zamora; the following year it was assigned to the judicial district of Puebla de Sanabria, to which it still belongs.
