What to see and do in Morales de Toro

Morales de Toro
Village
Morales de Toro is a town of 918 inhabitants in the Alfoz de Toro, in Zamora, 41 kilometres from the provincial capital; the flat terrain is crossed by the Bajoz river and by the Duero motorway. It is one of the largest production centres of the Toro designation of origin. There are signs of settlement as early as Roman times, and it was probably during the Mozarabic resettlement promoted by Alfonso III of Asturias in the Duero basin that the castle or fortress once found there was built. In 1153 Alfonso VII of León included Morales within the Tierra de Toro, granted to that city. The name comes from the moral or black mulberry tree, a tree of communal (concejil) tradition, and the addition 'de Toro' distinguishes it from other villages of the same name such as Morales del Vino or Morales del Rey.
The timber roof of the main chapel of San Juan Bautista
Monument
The medieval church, rebuilt in the sixteenth century, preserves a magnificent wooden framework in the main chapel; after the collapse of the original building a new chapel was finished in 1983 with the rescued elements.
The Bajoz river
Nature
The Bajoz river rises near Castromonte, in the province of Valladolid, and receives the waters of the Retortero and Daruela streams as it passes through Mota del Marqués; it continues through San Cebrián de Mazote, Casasola de Arión, San Román de Hornija, Morales de Toro and Toro, before joining the Hornija river, itself a tributary of the Duero. On its upper course the Castromonte reservoir was built, also known as the Santa Espina dam because of its proximity to the Cistercian monastery of Santa María de la Espina, an embankment dam with a clay core and a capacity of 60,000 cubic metres. As it passes through Morales de Toro, the Bajoz irrigates the water-meadows and hillsides that support the vineyards that give the municipality its fame.
The battle of Morales
Historical milestone
The engagement fought on 2 June 1813 in the municipal district of Morales put an end to the operations of the Peninsular War in the province of Zamora, six years after the start of the conflict.
The wineries of Morales de Toro
Food and drink
