What to see and do in Casasola de Arión

Casasola de Arión
Village
Casasola de Arión is a village of about 205 inhabitants bathed by the río Bajoz, in the Montes Torozos district, in the province of Valladolid. It was simply called Casasola — a name already documented in 1040 — until Philip V granted in 1725 the title of duke of Arión to Baltasar de Zúñiga y Guzmán, who gave the town the name "de Arión", later joined to the original. It belonged to the province of Toro and the diocese of Zamora, with a feudal origin that shaped the unequal division of land between large landowners and landless day labourers. At the beginning of the 20th century the village developed its own workshops for manufacturing agricultural winnowing machines, as did other nearby towns. Its church of la Asunción, from the 15th and 16th centuries, combines rubblework and rammed earth with an ashlar-stone tower.
The winnowing machines of Casasola
Curiosity
From the thirties of the 20th century this village specialised in making winnowing machines, the machines that separated the grain from the straw. At the beginning of the fifties there came to be more than twenty firms devoted to them in a locality of few residents.
The Duchy of Arión
Historical milestone
The Dukedom of Arión is a noble title with grandeeship of Spain that Philip V granted on 20 September 1725 to Baltasar de Zúñiga y Guzmán, 2nd Marquis of Valero and former viceroy of Sardinia, Navarre and New Spain. The dignity was created over the towns of Casasola and Morales, which Zúñiga held through maternal inheritance; the first, until then simply Casasola, was renamed Casasola de Arión. Unmarried and childless, he founded an entail that, after several successive shifts, brought the title to María Teresa Pacheco, sister of the 13th Duke of Frías, in whose descendants it has continued. The dukes exercised their manorial rights in Arión and Morales until the abolition of manorial lordships in 1837. The duke's house preserves a 16th-century wrought-iron grille and a coat of arms bearing the cross of Calatrava.
