What to see and do in San Román de Hornija

San Román de Hornija
Village
San Román de Hornija is a village of 295 inhabitants in the province of Valladolid, in the Tierra del Vino comarca, beside the Duero and covered by the Toro designation of origin. Its parish church stands on an ancient monastery founded by the Visigothic king Chindasvinto and rebuilt in the 10th century in Mozarabic style, of which six Visigothic capitals and a Mozarabic column survive; the current Baroque building, with a single nave and a tower-porch, holds the tomb of Chindasvinto and his wife Reciberga. On the municipal grounds, the La Requejada site, excavated in 1972, yielded a burial of the Cogotas I culture, from the Late Bronze Age, with grave goods including an elbow fibula, a silver prism and pottery decorated using the boquique technique.
