The Bajoz river Nature · Morales de Toro, Alfoz de Toro, Zamora The Bajoz river rises near Castromonte, in the province of Valladolid, and receives the waters of the Retortero and Daruela streams as it passes through Mota del Marqués; it continues through San Cebrián de Mazote, Casasola de Arión, San Román de Hornija, Morales de Toro and Toro, before joining the Hornija river, itself a tributary of the Duero. On its upper course the Castromonte reservoir was built, also known as the Santa Espina dam because of its proximity to the Cistercian monastery of Santa María de la Espina, an embankment dam with a clay core and a capacity of 60,000 cubic metres. As it passes through Morales de Toro, the Bajoz irrigates the water-meadows and hillsides that support the vineyards that give the municipality its fame.
