What to see and do in Pollos

Pollos
Village
Pollos is a village of 565 inhabitants in the Valladolid comarca of Tierra del Vino, situated in the valley of the Duero, which borders the municipal area to the north and receives there the waters of the Trabancos; the settlement stands at 670 metres, between the Hornos hill and the river's bank. It was already inhabited in Vaccean times and preserves finds of apparently Visigothic character still unstudied, although it is not documented as such until the 13th century, in 1237. In the 16th century Philip II sold the place to Francisco de Dueñas, and in the 17th it passed to Rodrigo Calderón, marquis of Siete Iglesias. Its church is dedicated to San Nicolás de Bari, patron of the village, and the festivals of Nuestra Señora and San Roque are celebrated from 14 to 18 August.

Nature
The municipality, with a flat relief in the Duero valley and crossed by the Trabancos river, ranges between 655 and 751 metres above sea level; the church of San Nicolás de Bari gives its name to the feast day of 6 December. Pollos is part, together with Castronuño, Torrecilla de la Abadesa and Tordesillas, of the Castronuño-Vega del Duero River Banks Nature Reserve, the only protected natural area in the province of Valladolid, also known as the Great Florida of the Duero. The wetland originated with the construction of the San José reservoir in the 1940s, which flooded fertile sediments colonised by large reed beds; today it is a nesting and stopover area for waterbirds such as the purple heron, the black-crowned night heron and the osprey, and it is also home to otters and grass snakes.
