What to see and do in Nava del Rey

Nava del Rey
Village
Nava del Rey is a city of 1.924 inhabitants in the comarca of Tierra del Vino, in the province of Valladolid, with a municipal area of more than 126 km² today devoted mainly to dry farming, although until the late 19th century the vineyard was its economic engine. It arose in the 12th century, during the Christian repopulation, as Nava de Medina, subordinate to the Comunidad de Medina del Campo; in 1560 it was exempted from that jurisdiction, passed from hamlet to town and adopted the name Nava del Rey. The 18th-century wine boom left its mark in a rich artistic heritage and in numerous underground wine cellars, some open to visitors today. In 1877 Alfonso XII granted it the title of city. It also preserves houses bearing coats of arms, an ice well and a traditional working cooperage.
The church of the Santos Juanes
Monument
It is the town's great church and its most recognisable landmark, popularly known as the Giralda de Castilla for its graceful tower, in reference to that of Seville; around it are organised the twelve penitential processions in which the town's seven Holy Week brotherhoods take to the streets. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1931, the building dates from the 16th century and was built by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, although of his Gothic design only the rectangular three-nave floor plan survives, since after his death the master builders completed the church in Classicist style. It preserves the high altarpiece, from the early 17th century, the work of Francisco Velázquez, Francisco Martínez and the sculptor Gregorio Fernández, as well as a sacristy of 1733 designed by Alberto Churriguera.
The Virgen de los Pegotes
Activity
From 30 November to 8 December the streets are lit with torches for the night processions of the Virgen de los Pegotes; in September, from the 6th to the 10th, young bulls are run with bull runs and amateur bullfights.
The phylloxera and the city title
Historical milestone
Alfonso XII granted Nava del Rey the title of city in 1877, at the height of the wine boom; at the end of that century phylloxera devastated the vineyard that had sustained the local economy since the medieval repopulation.
