The Duero river plain at Pollos Nature · Pollos, Tierra del Vino, Valladolid The municipality, with a flat relief in the Duero valley and crossed by the Trabancos river, ranges between 655 and 751 metres above sea level; the church of San Nicolás de Bari gives its name to the feast day of 6 December. Pollos is part, together with Castronuño, Torrecilla de la Abadesa and Tordesillas, of the Castronuño-Vega del Duero River Banks Nature Reserve, the only protected natural area in the province of Valladolid, also known as the Great Florida of the Duero. The wetland originated with the construction of the San José reservoir in the 1940s, which flooded fertile sediments colonised by large reed beds; today it is a nesting and stopover area for waterbirds such as the purple heron, the black-crowned night heron and the osprey, and it is also home to otters and grass snakes.
