What to see and do in Fresno el Viejo

Fresno el Viejo
Village
Fresno el Viejo is a town of 825 inhabitants located in the south of the province of Valladolid, on the border with Ávila and Salamanca. During the Middle Ages it belonged to the kingdom of León as the head of the Encomienda de Fresno el Viejo of the Order of St John, which marked the eastern boundary of the León kingdom with the Castilian Comunidad de Villa y Tierra of Medina del Campo; because of that allegiance it was represented in the cortes by the city of Toro until the 19th century. In 1833 it passed to the province of Valladolid. It preserves the Romanesque-Mudéjar church of San Juan Bautista and traditionally lived from the making of furniture and wicker utensils, a trade that almost disappeared with the sector's crisis in the mid-1980s.
The Church of San Juan Bautista de Fresno
Monument
The church of San Juan Bautista, in Fresno el Viejo, was built in Romanesque-Mudéjar style and is the finest building of a town that was the seat of the commandery of the Order of San Juan within the Kingdom of León, before passing in 1833 to the province of Valladolid. Its fame reaches beyond the village: a scale model of the building is exhibited at the Olmedo Mudéjar Theme Park.
The Era de las Aves
Activity
Opened in 2011, this small wildlife recovery centre takes in and rehabilitates injured birds; on the outskirts of the village a dovecote of Baroque design and a manor house turned into a cultural centre are also preserved.
