Carpio
Village
Carpio is a town in the province of Valladolid, in the district of Tierra de Medina, situated at an altitude of 759 metres. It has 923 inhabitants, compared with the 656 it had in the mid-19th century. On 23 November 1809 the Battle of Carpio was fought on its land, in which Spanish troops defeated the French. Its heraldic coat of arms and flag were officially approved on 22 March 2005. It preserves the parish church of Santiago Apóstol as the main building of its heritage.
The Trabancos river
Nature
The Trabancos is a seasonal river, a tributary of the Duero from the south, which rises in La Moraña, in the province of Ávila, near Herreros de Suso, at about 1,100 metres above sea level, and runs some 85 kilometres before flowing into the Duero at Pollos, passing between the valleys of the Zapardiel and the Guareña. Its channel, stable but with little flow except during torrential rains, crosses the 56.50 square kilometres of the district of Carpio, among other towns in the province of Valladolid such as Fresno el Viejo and Castrejón. For centuries it had no bridges, so that in winter floods left the road cut off, a hardship noted by 19th-century travellers.
The battle of Carpio
Historical milestone
The Battle of Carpio was fought on 23 November 1809 beside this town in the province of Valladolid, near Medina del Campo, during the Peninsular War. Napoleonic troops, with 10,000 men under General Kellermann, occupied the town; the Spanish, about 19,000 soldiers commanded by the Duke of Parque, advanced on it and fought a hard battle, in which the Spanish commanders Salvador de Molina and Colonel Juan Drimgold were killed. The French were repelled and the town was freed, although the victory proved not to be decisive: a few days later, on 28 November, the French took their revenge at Alba de Tormes. The village, which then had around 650 inhabitants, remained a reference point of the campaign on the banks of the Trabancos.
