What to see and do in Castrejón de Trabancos

Castrejón de Trabancos
Village
Castrejón de Trabancos is a village of 171 inhabitants in the valley of the river Trabancos, which owes its name to a small walled castle on which the settlement was established, atop the hill, around the 11th century. Situated on frontier land between the old kingdoms of León and Castile, it was the scene of feats of arms and in the 15th century passed to the Señorío de Fonseca. It preserves houses bearing coats of arms and underground wine cellars, and its Baroque church of la Asunción, entirely of brick, dates from the 18th century and holds, alongside a 17th-century crucifix, a neoclassical altarpiece with the Virgin ascending flanked by san Sebastián and san Martín; it can be visited by contacting the town hall. At its August festivals, in honour of la Asunción and San Roque, bull runs and capeas are held.

Monument
Baroque of the 18th century, it is roofed with a barrel vault and holds a Neoclassical altarpiece and a crucifix of the 17th century; the church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo was damaged during the War of Independence.
The town of Castrilon
Curiosity
A document of 1265 mentions the villa of Castrilon, settled around a small walled castle on top of the hill; in the 15th century it passed to the lordship of the Fonseca family and it still preserves houses with coats of arms.
