The nature reserve of the Riberas de Castronuño Nature · Castronuño, Tierra del Vino, Valladolid The Reserva Natural de las Riberas de Castronuño-Vega del Duero, also known as the Gran Florida del Duero, protects the riverside woods and wetlands of the settlements of Castronuño, Pollos, Torrecilla de la Abadesa and Tordesillas, along a stretch where the Duero forms one of the most pronounced meanders in Europe, visible from the La Muela viewpoint in Castronuño. The San José reservoir, built in the 1940s, flooded fertile sediments that were colonised by large stands of reed beds, which attracted numerous waterbirds such as the purple heron, the black-crowned night heron and the osprey. It was declared a Special Protection Area for Birds in 1992 and a Nature Reserve ten years later. Photo: SGGREDIAGA (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Castronuño
