Villamuriel de Campos
Village
Villamuriel de Campos is a hamlet in the Valladolid stretch of the Tierra de Campos, beside the River Navajos, with 55 inhabitants; its name recalls the old “villa del muro” (“village of the wall”). A Romanised Celtiberian settlement once stood here, next to the Roman road that ran from Clunia to Astorga. In its built-up centre the church of San Pelayo stands out, dating from the late 18th century and raised on an earlier temple, where a relic of the Holy Cross brought from Liébana in 1816 is venerated; the old 15th-century public granary has been converted into a medical practice. The branch line of the Burra train once ran through the village, disappearing in 1969; its old station and a brick factory with its chimney still standing remain. The village lives from growing cereals, alfalfa and sunflowers, and from sheep farming.
