Villacid de Campos
Village
Villacid de Campos is a municipality in the province of Valladolid, situated next to the Villafáfila lagoons, within the La Nava-Campos Norte Special Protection Area for Birds of the Natura 2000 network, and crossed by the río Navajos. A village of about 83 inhabitants, down from the 560 recorded by Madoz, it lives off farming and livestock. Its Gothic church of Santa María la Nueva, from the 16th century, built of brick with an ashlar chancel, has attached to it a circular turret known as El Cubo, the only remnant of an old fortress that tradition attributes to Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid Campeador. On the outskirts stands the Baroque hermitage of Bustillino, from the 18th century, from which a pilgrimage sets out every 9 September.
