San Cebrián de Mazote
Village
San Cebrián de Mazote is a hamlet in the province of Valladolid, beside the río Bajoz, with barely a hundred residents. It arose from a community of Mozarabic Christians who fled Al-Andalus at the end of the 9th century, which by around the year 915 was already formed around a monastery of which the church of San Cipriano survives, one of the great 10th-century Mozarabic temples in Spain: three naves of horseshoe arcades and, unusually, an apse also of horseshoe shape opposite it on the western side of the central nave. The village also preserves the convent of Santa María de las Dueñas, founded in 1307 and inhabited by Dominican nuns until 1837, where, by order of Philip II, Bárbara Blomberg, mother of Don Juan de Austria, resided.
Church of San Cipriano de San Cebrián de Mazote
Monument
One of Spain's great Mozarabic churches, located in the centre of San Cebrián de Mazote (Valladolid), where it serves as parish church within the archdiocese of Valladolid. Built in the early 10th century over a 7th-century Visigothic origin, it is linked to the reign of Ordoño II of León: it belonged to a monastery founded by Abbot Martín together with a Mozarabic monastic community from Córdoba, in Al-Andalus, and a document from the year 952 mentions its abandonment in favour of San Martín de Castañeda. It has three naves separated by horseshoe arcades on reused columns and three apses with an inscribed horseshoe-shaped plan. It has been a National Monument since 22 July 1916.
