What to see and do in Tiedra

Tiedra
Village
Tiedra, a town of about 270 inhabitants that includes the settlement of Pobladura de Sotiedra, rises at 824 metres on the western foothills of the Montes Torozos, precisely where the páramo drops towards the Tierra de Campos and the Alfoz de Toro. A castle crowns the hill on which the village sits, and on the nearby hill of la Ermita stood the Vaccaean and later Roman city of Amallóbriga. The commercial prosperity of the late 19th and early 20th centuries left in its townscape buildings disproportionate to its size, alongside three churches, the old public granary and an old slaughterhouse. Also notable in its religious heritage is the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Tiedra Vieja, at the Amallóbriga archaeological site.
Castle of Tiedra
Monument
Fortress of the 11th century whose keep, rectangular, reaches twenty metres in height with walls two and a half metres thick. It preserves two circular drum towers and stretches of wall of the repopulation period. A Bien de Interés Cultural since 1985, it was restored and reopened in May 2013.
Amallóbriga, the Vaccaean city
Curiosity
Before the castle and the four parishes, these lands were inhabited by the Vaccei during the first millennium before Christ. From that settlement arose in Roman times the city of Amallóbriga, whose memory is associated with the municipal district of Tiedra.
Climb to the keep of Tiedra
Activity
After the restoration begun in 2011, the castle reopened to the public in May 2013. The visit allows one to walk the wall-walks, see the stone battlements and the recreated wooden defensive structures and climb to the top of the tower, of twenty metres.
