What to see and do in Urones de Castroponce

Urones de Castroponce
Village
Urones de Castroponce is a hamlet in Tierra de Campos, in the province of Valladolid, whose name comes from the Latin furo, furonis (ferret), documented since ancient times as Furones; the surname Castroponce, in use since the 18th century, recalls its belonging in the Early Modern period to the county of that name and distinguishes it from its namesake Hurones, in Burgos. It already appears mentioned as Furones in a document from the abbey of Sahagún dated 4 April 970, and in 1042 a donation is recorded to the monastery of Santa María de León that includes its church, dedicated to San Salvador. With about 94 inhabitants, its Mudéjar church of the Salvador holds one of the best altarpieces in the comarca, and every 17 January it lights the bonfire of San Antón with its cencerrada.
