Castroponce
Village
Castroponce, in the northwest of the Tierra de Campos, in the province of Valladolid, was called Castrodonín until the mid-12th century. On the hill of La Fortaleza survive the remains of a castle that, within the frontier line set by the Treaty of Fresno-Lavandera of 1183, defended the Kingdom of León against Castile, until Castilian troops under Alfonso VIII took it in 1196. After the 1961 flood, which destroyed the lower part of the village, the Pueblo Nuevo was built nearby, so the settlement today is made up of two nuclei. Its church of Santa María, of adobe and brick, has three naves with groin vaults and preserves sculptures by Tomás de la Sierra, such as the Assumption on the baroque main altarpiece. The village, with around 130 inhabitants, celebrates the Corderada on Christmas Eve after Midnight Mass.
