Becilla de Valderaduey
Village
Becilla de Valderaduey is a municipality of the Tierra de Campos district, in the north of the province of Valladolid, crossed from north to south by the río Valderaduey. Its name comes from the Vaccaean vaikella, a diminutive of vaika, "vega" (meadow), documented since the 11th century in forms such as Vezella or Veciella before settling into its current form. It has 206 inhabitants and lives from farming and livestock raising. It preserves a bridge and a stretch of Roman road declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1995, part of the route that linked Astorga with Zaragoza, and two churches: that of la Asunción, from the 17th century, and that of San Miguel, from the 16th century and Mudéjar in style, which preserves a polychrome coffered ceiling despite later reforms. The patronal festivities are held around 15 May, the feast of San Isidro Labrador.
