La Unión de Campos
Village
La Unión de Campos is a town in the province of Valladolid, in the Tierra de Campos comarca, with around 210 inhabitants, born from the merger of Villagra and Villar de Roncesvalles, two settlements separated by a small stream and at odds over jurisdiction disputes. Villar de Roncesvalles was founded in June 1215, when Alfonso IX of León allowed the Navarrese order of Roncesvalles, which protected pilgrims to Santiago, to settle in an area of Villagra and build a monastery that lasted until the 17th century. In the 14th century it came to have four churches administered by the friars of Roncesvalles. It adopted its current name, La Unión de Campos, by royal decree in 1916; of those temples, only that of la Asunción remains open for worship.
