Mayorga
Village
Mayorga is a town in the province of Valladolid with around 1,350 inhabitants, set on a lookout point overlooking the valley of the río Cea, on the border between the former kingdoms of Castile and León, to which it belonged alternately. Its origins go back to the Meóriga cited by Ptolemy among the pre-Roman Vaccaei settlements. In the 13th century it belonged to the House of Castro and was an occasional residence of the Leonese kings Ferdinand II and Alfonso IX. Of its old wall only one of the four gates survives, today known as el Arco. Every 27 September the town switches off its lights for El Vítor, a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional (an official Spanish designation for festivities of national tourist interest), in which residents carry hides soaked in burning pitch in honour of Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo.
