Montealegre de Campos
Village
Montealegre de Campos is a hamlet of around 105 inhabitants in the Tierra de Campos comarca, in the province of Valladolid, situated on the edge of the páramo, near the boundary with Palencia, on a promontory overlooking the land. It was an important Vaccaean city in the Iron Age and remained so in Roman times, when it was called Intercatia; a bronze hospitium from the year 134 survives from that period. At the end of the 13th century, a member of the Meneses family had the present castle built, today an interpretation centre for the Middle Ages and the crowning feature of the village's Conjunto Histórico-Artístico (a Spanish heritage protection category for historic ensembles). It also has a Shepherd's Museum, and celebrates its festivities beside the 17th-century chapel of Nuestra Señora de Serosas, at the end of June.
