Ampudia
Village
Ampudia is a town in the province of Palencia whose history is tied to the Rojas family, ever since Sancho de Rojas, bishop of Palencia and archbishop of Toledo, granted in the early 15th century the fief of Fuent Pudia to his nephew Pedro García de Herrera, the origin of the County of Ampudia. It was an episcopal see and had convents of Templars, Augustinians and Poor Clares; its town centre, with wooden and adobe arcades on Corredera and Ontiveros streets, was declared a historic-artistic site in 1965. It is crowned by the 15th-century castle, which belonged to the Duke of Lerma and today houses the Eugenio Fontaneda Collection, and by the Colegiata de San Miguel, Gothic-Renaissance in style, with the tower called the Giralda de Campos. It has about 590 inhabitants and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2010.
