Villerías de Campos
Village
Villerías de Campos is a hamlet of about seventy inhabitants in the Palencia Tierra de Campos region, against the 455 it had in 1900, whose name probably comes from Villarias, the town of Arias, already documented in a donation by Alfonso VIII from 1181. In the mid-19th century it had 90 dwellings, a school with 26 pupils and 92 households; today agriculture and cheese-making are its only means of livelihood. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza, dated to the 16th century, preserves remains of an earlier Romanesque building, such as the doorway; it covers its vaults with 18th-century plasterwork and holds several altarpieces, among them the main one, attributed to Inocencio Berruguete in 1566. Next to the town hall stands the hermitage of the Cristo de la Salud, to which the village has held a vow since the plagues of the 14th century.
