Melgar de Arriba
Village
Melgar de Arriba is the municipality of the province of Valladolid furthest from the capital, with around 160 inhabitants, set on a clay ledge overlooking the río Cea and its valley, on the border between the Castilian countryside of Tierra de Campos and the Páramo de León. Throughout its history it has borne names as expressive as Melgar de la Frontera or Melgar del Rey, when in the 15th century, in a period of economic expansion, it came to exceed 900 inhabitants as the head of the county of Melgar; between 1591 and 1646 a crisis reduced its population by 70%, to fewer than 300 inhabitants. Of its 15th-century Mudéjar church of Santiago only ruins and the bell tower remain.
