What to see and do in Grajal de Campos

Grajal de Campos
Village
Grajal de Campos, a Leonese town of the Tierra de Campos through which the Camino from Madrid to Santiago passes, may have originated in a Roman stronghold raised around the year 117 BC by the Gracchus brothers, from whose surname, Gracca, its name would derive. Documented since the year 874, when Alfonso III the Great endowed it with great institutional standing, it became from 960 onward a regional market and the seat of a county, until the decline of the local nobility. In 1998 the village itself bought from its owners, for the symbolic price of six pesetas, the Renaissance Palace of the Counts of Grajal, next to the castle laid out by Lorenzo de Aldonza between 1517 and 1521 and considered the first artillery castle in Spain. With about 200 inhabitants, it lies at 813 metres above sea level.
Castle of Grajal de Campos
Monument
Considered the first artillery castle in Spain, it was built between 1517 and 1521 by order of Hernando de Vega to designs by Lorenzo de Aldonza. It has a quadrangular plan with four towers for the cannon and has been a Monumento Nacional (Spain's heritage designation in force until 1931) since 1931.

Curiosity
In 1998 the village bought the Renaissance palace of the counts of Grajal from its owners, a Monumento Nacional (Spain's heritage designation in force until 1931) since 1931 and then in a ruinous state, for the symbolic price of six pesetas. The deal saved the building from disappearing.
