What to see and do in Villasexmir

Villasexmir
Village
Villasexmir is a hamlet of the province of Valladolid in the Montes Torozos, with fewer than seventy inhabitants, whose Germanic name, Villa plus the personal name Sexmirus, points back to the 10th or 11th century; in the 14th century it was listed within the alfoz of Torrelobatón. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is Mudéjar, with two naves and a 16th-century wooden coffered ceiling decorated with knots and stars, and holds a chapel dedicated to Beato Florentino Asensio Barroso, bishop of Barbastro, born in the village and martyred in the civil war of 1936, in whose honour a festival is held on 9 August. On the outskirts stands the hermitage of the Cristo de la Agonía, from the 17th and 18th centuries, with a Baroque altarpiece attributed to Gregorio Fernández. Its patron saint is San Blas.

Villasexmir, a Germanic name
Curiosity
The place name was formed by joining the word villa to the personal name Sexmirus, a name of Germanic origin frequent in the 10th and 11th centuries. In 1219 a mill is already documented in its municipal district and in the 14th century the place belonged to the alfoz of Torrelobatón.
