What to see and do in La Zarza

La Zarza
Village
La Zarza is a village of 109 inhabitants in Campo de Peñafiel, Valladolid, between the streams of the Vallejo and the Agudilla, which flow into the river Zapardiel. It is already mentioned on 14 February 1259, when the master of the Order of Santiago, Pelayo Pérez Correa, donated several estates of the place to Martín Alfonso de León, son of King Alfonso IX. Its church, dedicated to San Silvestre, finishes its tower with a brick section pierced by twelve round-arched openings, and the old granary on calle Real houses the Museo de Aperos Santa Eufemia. On the municipal land is also La Cabaña de Silva, a farmstead of winemaking tradition with a cellar under the Rueda designation of origin.

Historical milestone
During the reign of Juan II of Castile (1406-1454) the Master of the Order of Santiago granted properties in La Zarza to Martín Alfonso de León; the king's own chronicle would mention the place again when recounting how the King of Navarre occupied it with seventeen hundred horsemen.

Food and drink
A wine estate of the municipal district supplied officers of the court for almost two centuries and its prestige led to the creation of a noble title in April 1875, under Alfonso XII. Its vines produce today within the Rueda designation.
