What to see and do in Pozal de Gallinas

Pozal de Gallinas
Village
Pozal de Gallinas is a village of 556 inhabitants in the Valladolid district of Tierra de Medina, documented since 1154 and with a name fixed around 1265; in 1559 it unsuccessfully tried to break away from Medina del Campo. In the town centre stands the church of San Miguel Arcángel, with a Baroque altarpiece, next to a stone cross that presides over the square, and a stone conduit with iron spouts that supplied water to the residents. At the edge of the village a Mudéjar-style trough is preserved, beside the Cañada Real, restored a few years ago, and a kilometre and a half away the hermitage of the Virgen de la Estrella, the village's patroness, in whose name the festivities are held on 8 September.
Church of San Miguel Arcángel de Pozal
Monument
It stands out for its Baroque altarpiece and for the stone carving of its doorways. The village appears cited in writing as early as 1154 and with its present name from 1265, when it belonged to the alfoz of Medina del Campo.
The republic of the poor
Curiosity
Between 1864 and 1867 an experimental community known by that name operated on the outskirts of the village. Of it there remain the ruins that the residents call El torrejón, on the edge of the built-up area.
The descent of the Virgen de la Estrella
Activity
On 30 August the image is moved from its hermitage, a kilometre and a half from the village, and stays nine days in the parish church until the feast of 8 September, with dancing to the sound of the dulzainas.
The riot against the disentailment
Historical milestone
The residents rioted against the sale of the common lands driven by the disentailment laws, in one of the most notorious rural protests in the province in the middle of the nineteenth century.
