Almenara de Adaja
Village
Almenara de Adaja is a municipality of barely 24 inhabitants in the Tierra de Pinares district, in the province of Valladolid, at 773 metres above sea level beside the River Adaja, which flows down from the Tierra de Arévalo towards the Duero. Its name comes from the Arabic al-manāra, “the watchtower”, and until the 1916 reform of municipal names the village was simply called Almenara. In its municipal area, shared with a small corner of neighbouring Puras, the 4th-century Roman villa of Almenara-Puras was excavated, a site studied by archaeologists and historians from the University of Valladolid under the sponsorship of the provincial council (Diputación). It is visited today together with the Museum of Roman Villas, the first of its kind in Spain, which includes a reconstruction of a period house.
